THE PROJECT

Chamanculo C and Xipamanine are two neighborhoods of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, which have a high density of population and very critical housing and hygienic conditions due to the lack of basic services. 95% of the population of the districts use cooking stoves which have a low energy efficiency.
AVSI Foundation, Carbon Sink Group srl, CLOROS srl, MAN.SE.F. Onlus are developing together two projects to promote energy efficiencyconserve natural resources and to improve the living conditions of the poor population living in Chamanculo C and Xipamanine.
  • The first project “Improved Cooking Stoves in Chamanculo C, Maputo” involves the replacement of 5.000 “traditional cook stoves” with improved cooking stoves with low environmental impact. This project is developed under the registered Gold Standard Program of Activities (PoA) “GS1247 Improved Kitchen Regimes Multi-Country PoA” of CO2balance.

  • The Second project, “Domestic Cooking Stoves in Maputo (Mozambique)”, be implemented under the CDM Scheme and it will include the replacement of around 10.000 “traditional cook stoves”.

Both projects have an expected operational lifetime of 7 years including the annual monitoring activities for achieving a certification for the produced carbon credits.

In addition to reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, so contributing to the mitigation of climate change, efficient cook stove projects will provide the following local benefits:
  • Up to 50% of savings in the charcoal consumed for cooking
  • Up to $ 190 yearly of savings for local families in charcoal needed for cooking
  • Reduced adverse health effects associated with smoke inhalation
  • Reduced cooking time, which will allow more time to be spent on other tasks
  • Reduced deforestation and degradation of forest as less wood will be need for charcoal production
